UPDATE: OWENSBORO, Ky. (10/10/18) — The Owensboro Police Officer shot by a Hathaway Street resident this morning is in recovering from surgery and considered in “good condition”.

Kentucky State Police Public Information Officer Corey King said KSP was notified at approximately 6:30 a.m. by OPD of a shooting involving an OPD officer and requested Post 16 to investigate.

KSP’s preliminary investigation revealed that around 5:30 a.m., OPD Officer Zachary Morris, 23 of Owensboro responded to the report of a suspicious person possibly breaking into parked vehicles in the area of Hathaway and Sixth streets. When Morris arrived, he spotted a person matching the description who fled on foot.

KSP said Morris gave chase and lost sight of the person behind houses in the 500 block of Hathaway Street. As Morris was checking in a fenced-in area at 522 Hathaway St., the homeowner shot and struck Morris.

Morris, who was wearing a ballistic vest, was struck in the lower abdominal area. The 2-year OPD veteran patrolman, was taken to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

KSP’s Critical Incident Response Team is helping investigators in the incident while OPD’s Criminal Unit is investigating other events leading up to the shooting. KSP determined Morris did discharge his weapon during the the incident but no one was hit.

The homeowner was detained for questioning but has returned home. No charges have been filed.

OWENSBORO, Ky. (10/10/18) — An Owensboro Police Officer has been shot after responding to the report of a suspicious person in the Hathaway Street area this morning.

OPD Public Information Officer Andrew Boggess said OPD was dispatched earlier this morning to a residence in the 500 block of Hathaway Street. A suspect fled from officers on foot. While officers were checking the backyard, a resident shot through a fence and struck an officer.

At this time, the officer is in surgery and the resident is being interviewed by Kentucky State Police, which is in charge of the investigation.
