GardenofEatin 8.12.2019AOWENSBORO, Ky. (8/17/19) — Two OCTC students — Kara and Gabe McFadyen — will compete in the Farm to School Junior Chef competition next week at the Kentucky State Fair.

Kara and Gabe are brother and sister completing their last two of high school years at Owensboro Community and Technical College, both pursuing associate in applied science degrees in engineering and electrical technology. Dubbed “Garden of Eatin'”, the Region 3 team from Morgantown will be serving their locally famous white chicken chili which has a secret ingredient.

"The original recipe came from Mrs. Linda McQuady, who we go to church with at Green River Baptist Church,” said Kara McFadyen. “We discovered that this is an all-time favorite when we participated as members of the live cast for the drive through Christmas Scenes. We kick it up a notch with something special from our own HoneyBunny Gardens.”

Team coach Kaitlin Harrison and team supervisor Tracy Thornton are excited to be a part of the statewide cooking competition designed to offer youth the opportunity to learn valuable skills in recipe development, food preparation, marketing, public presentation, organization, teamwork and community involvement.

Additionally, the program stimulates interest in local agriculture, creates a nontraditional market for Kentucky producers, increases quality of products available to school cafeterias, and ultimately increases consumption of produce by Kentucky's students.

The team is sponsored by Main Street Collections in Morgantown along with the McFadyens’ grandparents, Ernie and Louise Koestner.

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture is committed to bringing fresh, high-quality Kentucky Proud products to Kentucky's school systems. This will enable students to grow in to strong, healthy young men and women who understand the importance of buying local while helping Kentucky farmers find new markets for their products. The Farm to School Junior Chef program began in 2013. The competition opens with district tournaments, followed by regionals and culminates with the state tournament.

The McFadyens are slated to compete at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20.
