octcs 01 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (10/8/19) — Owensboro Community and Technical College reported 75 students graduated with an sssociate in spplied science degree in Surgical Technology in May.

These students must also successfully pass a national professional licensure exam administered by National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting  in order to gain employment in the field, college officials indicated. Students from OCTC achieved a 100 percent first time pass rate on the exam. The program has earned the 100 percent first-time pass rate for six consecutive years.

"This is a great accomplishment and true testament to the dedication of the students in the program," OCTC president Dr. Scott Williams said in a statement. "It is also a credit to the faculty and the folks who work with the students in the clinical setting. We are extremely proud."

Zara Basham, coordinator for the program, said, "Our goal is to prepare students for the exam and for a surgical technology career. We try and arm them with the skills, knowledge and the expectations of the workplace."
