oboro public school1 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (10/14/19) — Owensboro Public Schools is back from Fall Break and there is quite a bit going on, OPS Spokesman Jared Revlett reports.

Listed below are upcoming activities:

One Book, One School
Sixth grade students at iMiddle and OMS as well as DCPS' Burns Middle School are reading Same Sun Here by Silas House and will be participating in a unique opportunity that will bring the book "to life" for them. In the book, the two main characters are pen pals. One of the characters is living in New York, but is from India and the other lives in Eastern Kentucky. In the book, the duo starts to realize they have a lot in common through their correspondence. 6th graders at Burns will write letters to students at OMS and iMiddle and vice versa throughout the time reading the book and will learn about each other and how their middle school experiences are similar and different. On Dec 2, the author, Silas House, is coming to speak to the students at OMS and iMiddle, and that day, they will be joined by the students from Burns so they \will get to meet their pen pals who they have been writing back and forth with for several months. Books are being distributed this week to the students and the project will begin later this week.

Toyota Ribbon Cutting
Save the date for Wednesday, 11-noon Wednesday. We are in the process of finalizing the ribbon cutting details for the Toyota Indiana Computer Integrated Manufacturing program at OIA as well as the DART Foundation Makerspace. We are waiting on final details from Toyota and the DART Foundation, but will pass those along as they come through.

Great Shake Out - Thursday, Oct. 17
Owensboro sits very near to one of the largest fault lines in the world and a catastrophic earthquake could happen at any moment. That is one reason why our school district always participates in the Great Shake Out earthquake drill that will take place nationwide 10:17 a.m. Thursday. Our schools use this opportunity to educate students on earthquake safety both at school and in their own homes, practice an earthquake drill and learn about ways to stay safe during an earthquake.
