Kat Barnett

OWENSBORO, Ky. (2/14/20) — As a single mom of two young children, Kat Barnett says she appreciates the resources available to students at Owensboro Community and Technical College. In particular, she values the Dar-Nek Childcare Center, which is part of the Head Start program. She takes comfort knowing her children are on campus with her.

Kat also realizes the importance of utilizing the federal work-study program, which provides part-time employment opportunities to students, college officials said. Through the work-study program, she works at the Teaching and Learning Center. The convenience of having a job on campus, the flexibility of arranging her work hours around her class schedule, and the opportunity to complete homework during her work hours make the work study job a blessing to her.

Kat is also thankful for the TRiO program, which serves first generation, low-income, and disabled students. She describes TRiO as "a support system that will help students succeed in their college goals. TRiO provides a lot of support, not just with advising but also with family support (and) personal support."

Kat will complete her coursework this summer and graduate with her associate in arts degree. Her ultimate academic goal is to earn a doctorate in education.
