rand paul in oboroOWENSBORO, Ky. (5/2/18) — U.S. Sen. Rand Paul was in Owensboro today and addressed Rotary Club members on his concerns about Afghanistan and the federal budget deficit. But, Paul also touted the growing economy and tax breaks for workers.

Paul told the group during its luncheon meeting about his angst over the failure of a Republican dominated Senate and House to pass a better budget. He said he was not in favor of former President Obama’s willingness to sign budgets with trillions of dollars in deficit and he’s still opposed to President Donald Trump’s signing of a budget with a deficit.

Paul was also negative about the continued presence of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan saying there is no military solution and the U.S. should, “claim a victory and pull out”.

He was optimistic about the U.S. economy and the way it’s turned around under Trump’s administration. He said he considers the economy as a, “glass three-quarters full,” scenario. He said the federal tax cuts passed will help people everywhere except the richer populations of California and New York.

He said 90 percent of the U.S. population will see a cut in their taxes.

Paul said a tax cut is better than the redistribution of the tax burden. The tax cut on businesses will bring jobs back to America and boost the economy such as Apple’s pledge to bring jobs back to the U.S. due to the new tax law. Apple announced earlier this year it will open a new campus in the U.S. and hire 20,000 employees.

“Redistribution is not fair,” said Paul.

An attempt to reform Social Security is still something he’d like to see, he said. While the U.S. is $20 - $21 trillion in debt, the Social Security system is another $7 trillion in debt and Medicare is $30 - $45 trillion in debt. He would like to see the Social Security age raised to 70 in most cases, he said.

“Someone has to have the courage to fix this,” said Paul.

Quite of bit of Paul’s time was spent talking about the shooting during the 2017 Congressional Baseball Game practice, where U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise was severely wounded. Paul was at the practice during the shooting. He said he always asks for an armed law enforcement officer to be present when he speaks. A representative of the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office was present during his Rotarian address.

Paul, an ophthalmologist, also spoke about his recent trips to Haiti and Guatemala to perform pro bono eye surgeries as part of a medical mission trip to those countries.
