The challenge involves parents taking a picture or video of a child reading, being read to, or taking a book selfie and posting the picture/video on Facebook or Twitter using #HCSreads.

At the end of every month, a drawing will take place, with a book-themed prize given away at random, HCS announced.

All Henderson County K-12 students are eligible to win. Henderson County Schools will be hosting literacy nights throughout the school year to promote the importance of literacy and reading for families.

The district reported reading for 20 minutes a day exposes a person to 1.8 million words per year. Early exposure to language is the greatest factor in language development and listening to other people read aloud is an important part of learning to read.
