HENDERSON COUNTY, Ky (12/13/17) — Smith Mills Volunteer Fire Department is turning to the public for help in an effort to find the source of area wildfires.

Over the last several months, Smith Mills Volunteer Fire Department reported a high rate of suspicious fires in their response area, and most have burned significant ground including several wooded areas. The latest fire burned a reported 15-plus acres that required multiple volunteer fire departments, more than 20 firefighters and in excess of 12 hours to extinguish.

Most of these fires have happened in area of the Alzey Bottoms and the Klondike Road area, fire officials indicated. Smith Mills crews have teamed up with the Kentucky Division of Forestry to try and eliminate these types of fires. The department is hoping to put a stop to the wildland blazes before someone loses substantial property or lives.

Both agencies are taking this matter seriously, firefighters said, which could result in prosecution to the highest extent.

Anyone with information concerning the fires is asked to call 1-800-27-ARSON. Any caller can remain anonymous, and may be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward.
