labor cabinet logoROBARDS, Ky. (12/14/17) — Labor Cabinet Deputy Secretary Mike Nemes visited Big Rivers Electric Corp.-Sebree Station in Robards today to present a Governor’s Safety and Health Award for the 3,069,227 production hours worked without a lost-time incident.

“Working for nearly six years without a lost-time injury is an amazing accomplishment,” said Ramsey. “This is the 13th Governor’s Safety and Health Award for Big Rivers Sebree Station, which speaks volumes to the emphasis that this company places on workplace safety. On behalf of Governor Bevin and the Kentucky Labor Cabinet, I congratulate Sebree Station and its employees for their hard work and dedication to achieving a safe and healthy workplace.”

Big Rivers is an electric generation and transmission cooperative headquartered in Henderson and is owned by three distribution cooperative members, Jackson Purchase Energy Corporation, headquartered in Paducah; Kenergy Corporation, headquartered in Henderson; and Meade County RECC, headquartered in Brandenburg. These member cooperatives deliver retail electric power and energy to more than 116,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers in portions of 22 western Kentucky counties. Big Rivers Electric Corporation employs 500 statewide, with Sebree Station employing 239 employees.

“We have achieved a monumental milestone to have worked three million hours without a lost-time injury and I couldn’t be more proud,” said Plant Manager Ron Gregory. “It takes a constant effort by everyone involved, especially by the folks who work in the hazardous conditions at our plant, to recognize those hazards and watch out for each other.”

State Rep. Suzanne Miles (Owensboro) also offered praise.

“Big Rivers Electric Corp.-Sebree Station has been a beneficial element in the development of this region,” Miles said. “This is evident with the incredible statistic of 3,069,227 consecutive hours without a lost-time injury or illness. Achievements such as this merit recognition and I am thankful that they are the recipients of the Governor’s Safety and Health Award. A company as impactful and efficient as Big Rivers Electric Corporation- Sebree Station could not be more deserving of the honor. The community is appreciative to all the employees that made the effort for safety not only for themselves but their co-workers.”

The Kentucky Labor Cabinet presents the Governor’s Safety and Health Award to highlight outstanding safety and health performance in Kentucky’s workplaces. A business may qualify for the award if its employees achieve a required number of hours worked without experiencing a lost-time injury or illness. The required number of hours is dependent upon the number of employees.

According to a recent report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Kentucky employers reported the lowest incident rate for nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses in the state’s history.

Based on a mathematical calculation that describes the number of recordable incidents per 100 full-time employees, Kentucky’s rate improved from 3.8 in 2014 to 3.7 in 2015. This rate has steadily declined since it was first calculated in 1996, when a rate of 8.4 was reported.
