Henderson Parks 3 7HENDERSON, Ky. (3/7/18) — The city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department won an award from the Kentucky Parks and Recreation Society for its collaborative “Halloween Trunk or Treat Extravaganza” that took place in October.

The trick-or-treat trail project, which started at Audubon Kids Zone and ended at the John F. Kennedy Community Center, won the “Program of the Year” in its class (departments with 11-19 full-time employees), city officials announced.

The “Halloween Truck or Treat Extravaganza” was organized by AKZ, the JFK Center and a coalition of five neighborhood churches. It was supported by hundreds of volunteers as well Henderson Police and Fire departments, Public Works and Parks and Recreation.

More than 1,200 people attended the event, and organizers are already working on the 2018 encore, city officials said.

Parks Director Trace Stevens, in nominating the program for the award, outlined the multiple successes of the event, including that it allowed children and families in that community of Henderson to enjoy a traditional trick or treat Halloween experience and enlightened participants about the recreational and education services provided by AKZ and JFK Center.

He said more than 70 groups, organizations, churches, businesses, homeowners, city departments and civic organizations hosted stops along the trick-or-treat trail connecting the AKZ and JFK Centers to hand out candy. At the JFK Center, participants were able to take part in a number of additional recreational activities.

“The true strength of this event was the massive number of volunteer participants that helped make it a success,” Stevens said. “The overall impact was enormous. In a single year … we were able to bring more than 1,200 individuals to a section of town that hasn’t seen traditional trick or treating in years.”
