one lane signHENDERSON, Ky. (1/8/19) — Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to restrict southbound traffic to one lane on the U.S. 41 twin bridges, between Henderson and Evansville, Indiana, starting 9 a.m. today.

Southbound traffic on the U.S. 41 bridgess will be restricted to one lane to allow a navigation light to be repaired or replaced. The U.S. Coast Guard received a report from a passing tow boat that one of the navigation lights on the bridge is out of service, KYTC Spokesman Keith Todd reported this morning.

Southbound traffic is expected to be restricted to one lane around three hours to facilitate the work. All southbound traffic will move to the left-hand or passing lane in this work zone.

The U.S. 41 twin bridges, also known as the Bi-State Viet Nam Gold Star Memorial Bridges, are located at U.S. 41 mile point 19.649, about a mile south of the Kentucky-Indiana State line. They carry approximately 40,000 vehicles per day across the Ohio River, between Henderson and Evansville.

The bridges are located about a mile downstream from the confluence of the Green and the Ohio rivers at Ohio River navigation mile point 786.8.

The northbound bridge was opened to traffic on July 4, 1932. The southbound bridge was opened to traffic Dec. 16, 1965. The structures have a total length of 5,393.6 feet with a 720-foot main navigation span. The bridge superstructure is a Warren cantilevered through-truss design.

As a reminder, the Indiana Department of Transportation has a bridge and pavement rehabilitation project, between the U.S. 41 twin bridges and the I-69 interchange with US 41. This work zone for the Fix for 41 project remains active into the summer.
