firework ordinanceHENDERSON, Ky. (10/8/19) — Henderson Board of Commissioners finalized changes in its fireworks ordinance during a meeting held earlier today.

After an ordinance review Aug. 13, commission members requested to expand the distance for the use of fireworks to 400 feet away from an animal shelter, nursing home or hospital.

Other changes in the ordinance involve restrictions on structures at fireworks retailers and the prohibition of the sale or use of sky lanterns. The latter was recommended by the fire department due to the nature of how they function with an open flame. The lanterns have been considered a fire hazard and banned in several states. 

In other business, the board:

• Finalized an ordinance creating a shift pay differential incentive for police officers.

• Heard a report from Henderson Tourist Commission Executive Director Abby Dixon about a possible future use for The Depot Community Room on the Henderson County Historical Society relocates its collections to the Henderson County Public Library next year. The proposal is to turn the space into a dedicated arts area with gallery, workshop and events spots. The commission voted approval for moving forward with plans.

• Passed resolutions amending the funding agreement with Henderson Tennis Club, authorizing participation in a litter abatement program and accepting a public transportation grant.

• Heard a proclamation recognizing Public Natural Gas Week and honoring Henderson Municipal Gas.

• Heard a report from City Manager Buzzy Newman on the proposed housing development at Constanza Drive and Copper Creek Drive and a second report on a proposed ordinance for solar energy systems. Following a review of the proposed solar energy ordinance by City Attorney Dawn S. Kelsey, the commission voted to send it to the Planning Commission for approval.

The next meeting is 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in the third-floor Assembly Room at the Henderson Municipal Center. A work session is scheduled 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15.
