snow driving1UNION COUNTY, Ky. (1/13/18) — State highway officials reported winds in the 10-15 mph range during the overnight hours created some issues for a number of counties across the region.  Drifting snow has been a particular problem.

Union County 911 Dispatch reported 25-30 incidents involving vehicles that have run off the roadway or become stuck in snow large snow drifts overnight, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Spokesman Keith Todd stated in a press release.

Highway Crews across the region went to standby status overnight due to cold temperatures that limited the effectiveness of salt and other ice-fighting chemicals, Todd said. The KYTC Union County crew kept two state trucks busy during the night responding to calls about drifting snow. Several other counties were also busy battling drifts and responding to other trouble spots.

Highway crews in western Kentucky returned to full staffing at 6 this morning in an effort to get highways as clear as possible before overnight low temperatures are expected to plummet into the single digits over the next several days, further hampering the ability to cut through accumulated ice and snow, Todd reported.

With another substantial snow event expected to reach the area Monday, officials said state highway crews have an additional sense of urgency as they ramp up snow and ice clearing efforts this morning.

Union County is not going to declare an official state of emergency, but released a public statement saying many roads in the county are impassable and are asking the public to stay off the roads if at all possible.

Transportation officials are also encouraging motorists to limit their travel to allow highway crews to concentrate on snow and ice clearing efforts across the region.  Fewer cars on the road mean fewer incidents that would hamper movement of snow plows and salt trucks.

Union County Judge Executive Jody Jenkins and Union County Emergency Management released the following statement:

“The public is encouraged to limit travel as much as possible. UCEMA also encourages the traveling public to pay close attention to roads where drifting is occurring.”

Todd reported drivers should use extreme caution while traveling the next couple of days. Safe driving techniques is one way to ensure you “survive your drive” during winter weather.

KYTC offers a few tips to remember:

• Buckle up for safety.
• Slow down, especially when driving in winter weather conditions.
• Allow more space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you.
• Brake early to allow plenty of time to stop.
• Brake gently to avoid skidding and never slam on the brakes;
• Turn on lights to be more visible to other motorists.
• Do not use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.
• Stay alert and look farther ahead.
