Heroes 3

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (4/15/16) — It was picture perfect weather for three brothers Thursday afternoon during the first Heroes of Hopkins County calendar photo shoot at the Veterans Memorial.

U.S. Navy World War II veteran Charlie Crowley along with Emery Crowley, also a WW II Navy veteran, and Army Korean War veteran Garnett Crowley seemed to enjoy their time together as photographer Gina Munger posed the trio — each holding black and white portraits from the past.

Heroes 1The Crowleys are three of six brothers, who all served in the military, and will be featured among 19 veterans and first responders nominated to appear in the Patrick Rudd Project calendar. The three living veterans of the family pointed out the brick with all six of their names that is situated along the Veterans Memorial walkway.

“I was with the seaplane squadron,” Charlie, 94, recalled. “It weighed 23 tons.”

Charlie and his brothers say their service to the country still means a lot to them today, as they smiled alongside 9/11 Heroes Run Director Kelly Forbes.

Forbes said calendars will be available at the Heroes Run event Sept. 10 in downtown Madisonville.

“This is a chance to bring our community together to honor our heroes,” Forbes said. “We’re glad they are excited about being in the calendar.”

The Madisonville siblings say they still like to get together on the weekends and sing.

Garnett, 88, sang a few lines of a Hank Thompson song, “The Wild Side of Life,” that seemed to light up the set.

“We like to get together and sing hillbilly music,” Emery, 90, said.

Garnett recalled dodging bullets sprayed from enemy aircraft over his tent at 2 a.m., while serving as a cook during the Korean War.

“The enemy knew we were sleeping, and we’d have to run out of there every few mornings,” he said.

Emery, who served in the South Pacific, said what he remembers most about WW II were the beautiful beaches on the islands.

Munger said she is looking forward to engaging in several more photo shoots involving local heroes over the next several days.
