Vet 2HANSON, Ky. (11/9/17) — Local police and sheriff’s deputies spent part of Tuesday with residents at the Joseph “Eddie” Ballard Western Kentucky Veterans Center to express appreciation for their service to the country.

Recreation Specialist Tonda Cavanaugh, who has worked at the center 14 years, has been busy coordinating activities for the veterans over the past several days.

Madisonville Police Department Officer Jeff Miller called and wanted to do a community outreach service project, Cavanaugh noted.

Officer Russell Nichols was alongside one veteran, who claimed a prize. Afterward, Nichols placed a veterans pin on his cap. Sheriff Matt Sanderson was also having fun helping with the game cards and conversing with his Bingo partner.

“We decided, since their favorite thing to do is play Bingo, that they would come and play and bring out pins in honor of Veterans Day,” Cavanaugh said. “They’re really good about doing things for us.”

Miller disclosed officers wanted to give back to veterans during Veterans week.

“I found some small tokens online,” the officer said. “Whatever their needs were, we wanted to accommodate just to show our appreciation for their service to the country.”

Resident Tim Simmons, a U.S. Army Veteran, said he has lived at the facility for six years. He served two years in Germany, a year and a half at Fort Polk in Louisiana. Afterward, he spent several years in the Army Reserves.

“I’m just glad that the police care enough about us,” Simmons said. “They’re not all selfish guys — they came out to spend some time with us. We like visitors, and when a whole group comes like today, that’s really special.”

Lt. Andy Rush grinned, saying Simmons raked in two Bingo wins during the visit. Simmons responded by saying that he “hates to lose.”

Veterans Day is celebrated annually Nov. 11 to honor all American military personnel that serve or have served. The holiday, previously known as Armistice Day, was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

The Western Kentucky Veterans Center opened March 14, 2002 in Hanson, consisting of 156 beds in providing long-term, skilled nursing care for Kentucky veterans.
