BHM 11 10MADISONVILLE, Ky. (11/11/17) — Alzheimer’s directly affects 5.4 million Americans, according to the National Alzheimer’s Association.

Baptist Health Madisonville plans to host educational stations to coincide with National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month 8-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28 at Miller Auditorium.

The program, entitled, “A Walk in Their Shoes,” will feature multiple booths allowing participants to understand what it is like to have dementia, BHM officials announced. No appointments are necessary.

President Ronald Reagan designated November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month in 1983.

According to caring.com, Alzheimer’s affects about half of American families, and managing risk factors early on plays a vital role in delaying or preventing cognitive problems later on.

Health experts say the disease is generally detected at the end stages, and memory loss is actually not a part of normal aging. Proven treatments include diet, exercise and medications to slow progression.

BHM Marketing and Public Relations Coordinator Kristy Quinn said health workers plan to raise money for charity 11:45 a.m. Nov. 20 during the facility’s annual “Pie in the Face” contest, where staff members pay for a chance to pie directors and administrators.
