Chili Cook off Flyer 1MADISONVILLE, Ky. (11/14/17) — Farmer’s Market Pavilion will be the “hot” spot Friday as several vie for bragging rights on the best bowl of chili in town.

For only $5, folks can choose a bowl of chili, unlimited fixings, a drink and taste a variety of recipes offered by area competitors 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday during the United Way of the Coalfield Chili Cook-off.

“All proceeds will benefit the nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization to support health and human services in Hopkins and Muhlenberg counties of Kentucky,” said Madisonville Spokesman Grayson Hagerman.

Local United Way Director Sean Mooningham said 15 teams have signed up and are ready to compete Friday. Some of the teams include city and county department workers as well as businesses getting in on the action.

“We’re entering the last month of our fundraising campaign, and we want everyone to come out and eat some good food for a good cause,” Mooningham said.

Food deliveries are available if requests are called in by Wednesday. Mooningham said those wishing to place chili orders can do so by calling Kelsey Teel at the Hopkins County Regional Chamber of Commerce at (270) 821-3435.

“We’ll even give ‘em a spoon to eat it with,” he said.

Madisonville Fire Department Chief Ray Wyatt won the Chili Cook-off contest a couple of years ago.

“We’re going to have four different people from the fire department this year,” the chief said, noting he learned how to make chili at the department. “I like mine really spicy, although up here, I try to keep it fairly tame so everybody can enjoy it.”

Wyatt said everyone has a really good time at the event, and there’s a chance that a local musician may stop by to provide entertainment.
