ky trans 300NORTONVILLE, Ky. (12/1/17) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is working with the city of Nortonville to close the New Salem Circle Railroad overpass today. The closure should be completed in the next hour or two, highway officials announced at 10:32 this morning.

An official closure notice for the overpass cites, “the critical condition of the substructure,” as a primary reason to stop traffic from crossing the structure at New Salem Circle milepoint 0.019.

KYTC bridge inspectors had been monitoring the overpass on a monthly basis. They found a number of substructure issues during a routine check of the overpass on Thursday resulting in the closure notice.

The overpass carries traffic over the CSX Railroad line just off US 41 at the south edge of Nortonville. The overpass will be blocked to all traffic with the use of signs, traffic barricades, and material placed across the roadway.

There will be no marked detour. Vehicle access to New Salem Circle (CR 4039) is maintained via a southern connection to U.S. 41 that has a grade-level rail crossing.

KYTC is responsible for administering the federal inspection program for all bridges in Kentucky. In addition to bridges along state highways, KYTC bridge inspectors are responsible for brindges and overpasses along city streets and county roads.
