HANSON, Ky. (12/20/17) — Area deputy and county clerks presented a $20,000 check to the Joseph “Eddie” Ballard Western Kentucky Veterans Center Tuesday afternoon.

The money was raised through the sale of license plate design birdhouses “Help a Veteran Every Day” project at Kentucky County Clerks offices this year.

Hopkins County Clerk Keenan Cloern said the Clerk’s Association split the money raised between the state’s four veterans centers.

Muhlenberg County Clerk Gaylon Spurlin was in Hanson for the occasion along with McCracken County Clerk Julie Griggs, Trigg County Clerk Carmen Finley, Christian County Clerk Mike Kim and Chief Deputy Clerk Richard House of Owensboro.

The money will be used to help with veterans care at the center. Ray and Brad Ballard were also on hand to celebrate the occasion.

Veterans Center Activity Director Kathy Son said the money spent last year paid for speech therapy, medical equipment and physical therapy items, wheelchair scales in addition to a reclining bathtub.

“The remaining funds went toward the residents’ Super Bowl party,” and other activities, Son said. “We already have a few ideas for some things we want to do this year.”

U.S. Army Veteran Tim Simmons, a resident at the Veterans Center in Hanson, accepted the check on behalf of the residents.
