hopkins co sealHOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (12/21/17) — Hopkins Fiscal Court approved the jailer’s request to make an emergency purchase at a meeting held this week.

Jailer Mike Lewis said Tuesday that the old boiler is leaking, which results in cold showers at Hopkins County Jail. Plans are to have the new boiler in place this week for a cost of $33,080 plus an $8,450 installation fee.

Lewis indicated leftover coal severance jail funds will be used to remedy the situation.

Fiscal Court approved Deputy Will Coursey’s request to award a $61,000 bid to Allied Contracting Group to construct a sheriff’s/automobile storage building at the county public works site on Laffoon Trail.

The court also approved to surplus four sheriff’s office vehicles. One will be used for spare parts. Coursey announced 86.36 percent of property tax has been collected thus far.

County Clerk Keenan Cloern announced the last day to change voter registration party affiliation is Dec. 31 related to the May Primary.

In other business, the court approved a $500 pauper burial.

Magistrates also agreed to amend its ordinance related to pauper burial fees, raised to $750 per advice of County Attorney Byron Hobgood to help offset cremation costs to funeral homes.

Carol Steel of Dawson Springs and Byron Pruitt of Hanson were appointed to the Extension District Board, and David West will fill Priti Patel’s unexpired term as General Manager of Madisonville Comfort Inn and Suites via recommendation of the Hopkins County Tourist and Convention Commission. Patel has moved out of state and is no longer able to fulfill the duty on the commission.

In addition, the court approved the appointment of Robert Carter to serve on the Hopkins County Cemetery Preservation Board. He will replace Patricia Hawkins, whose one-year term ends Dec. 31.

The next Hopkins Fiscal Court meeting is set for 10 a.m. Jan. 16.
