Latham 12 28UPDATE: (12/29/17) — An arrest report released today concerning a car salesman charged with theft at a Madisonville business this week indicated officers were unable to locate the missing money.

According to a Madisonville Police Department arrest report, Michael Latham, 53 of Nortonville told officers he took $3,909 from A Plus Auto Sales Wednesday night. Police reported Thursday the man initially called in that morning claiming the business had been robbed.

The report listed the money was still in a blue money bank bag when he left the business Wednesday, Latham told police, and while driving home, he "threw the money out the passenger window."

Officers reported trying to find the money bag, but came up empty handed.

Latham was released from Hopkins County Jail Thursday evening.

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (12/28/17) — A Nortonville man was charged with theft and falsely reporting an incident after police say he called in this morning claiming a business where he worked had been robbed.

Madisonville Police Department reported Michael Latham, 53, said a robbery had occurred at A Plus Auto Sales along North Main Street.

After officers followed up on the 8:53 a.m. call, Latham “appeared to be startled and informed someone had broke into the business during the night,” according to the report. “Latham proceeded to show officers how the offender made entry into the business and all the places they had went.”

After speaking to other workers and reviewing the information, police determined Latham was “not being completely honest with officers” due to inconsistencies in his story, MPD reported.

Reporting Officer Van Killough revealed Latham confessed that he took the money from the office the previous night and “discarded the stolen money so officers could not find it on him.”

He was charged with theft by unlawful taking (less than $10,000), false reporting and tampering with physical evidence.

Latham was listed as being held in Hopkins County Jail this evening, pending bond.
