Schomer 12 28 GMADISONVILLE, Ky. (12/28/17) — It took investigators less than 24 hours to make a felony arrest in an alleged arson case. The fire was said to be set while a woman was at her home on Grapevine road just before midnight Wednesday.

Madisonville Police Department charged 33-year-old Jason Lawrence Schomer with first-degree arson this afternoon. He was listed as being held in Hopkins County Jail on $10,000 cash bond tonight.

MPD reported patrolmen responded to an attempted burglary at Jayne Scott’s home at 11:56 p.m. The 58-year-old woman called 911, saying someone was trying to get into her house.

“While on the phone with dispatchers, Scott reported her house had just been set on fire,” Detective C.P. Haynie wrote in a press release. “Sgt. Justin Jones and Patrolman Tyler Russell were the first to arrive on scene and reported the south side of the home was engulfed in flames.”

Madisonville Fire Department arrived at the scene and quickly got the flames under control, police said.

First-degree arson is considered a Class A felony in Kentucky. If an individual is found guilty of the crime, it is punishable for 20-50 years or life imprisonment.
