HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (3/5/18) — Hopkins County Schools will be providing districtwide training for school resource officers in a "train-the-trainer" program in emotional intelligence.

Making schools a safe environment was discussed at a school board meeting held tonight.

HCS Director of Engagement Robert Carter will train guidance counselors and instructional staff. He said an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it relates to how people react and deal with certain situations.

In addition, the district plans to implement more security measures including using a portion of a $40,540 Student Support and Academic Enrichment grant to install a badge based entry system for the front doors at Browning Springs Middle School and zoom cameras for the high school parking lots in addition to upgrades of 59 interior cameras.

The grant proposal will be sent to the Kentucky Department of Education at the end of March, Jennifer Luttrell explained. The director of elementary instruction also noted 24 percent of the funds would be used to support visual and performing arts.

In other business, assistant superintendent Tommy Burrough recognized West Broadway Elementary School's workforce team — a new program for fifth-graders. He said each applicant goes through an extensive application and interview process that includes submitting references to FRYSC coordinator Julie Faulk. The students plan to apply for specific job placements such as special events/assembly crew, health/environmental crew, cafeteria crew, reading/math tutors and more. Students receive WBES bucks for their work that could be spent on choices including a free homework pass, extra art, extra recess and time assisting Faulk. Students must follow the school’s guidelines for success and be positive role models. The program has improved students’ motivation, responsibility and work ethic, while preparing them for real-life experiences such as applying for a job and being held accountable for their work performance.

The board approved the district’s 2018-19 school calendar and the boundary adjustment impacting Jesse Stuart, Grapevine, James Madison and Browning Springs schools attendance areas for the 2018-19 school year.

The school calendar can be viewed by clicking here.

The following activity fundraisers were approved:
1. BSMS Chorus to have Century Resources catalog sales with proceeds to be will be used for music, CD's, shirts, trips and supplies.
2. BSMS PTSA to host a School Dance with proceeds to be used for school supplies for students.
3. BSMS Football Team to host a School Dance with proceeds to be used for equipment and transportation needs.
There will be no school April 2-6 for spring break. The next meeting is 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 19.
