Board of Education General HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (6/5/18) — Hopkins County Board of Education approved an agreement with Hopkins Fiscal Court for school resource officers during a meeting held Monday evening.

The board and county share the expense for salaries paid to SRO officers in the district.

Sheriff Matt Sanderson said he truly appreciates the board taking an active role in the placement of more SRO officers in county schools, adding his intent is to provide them as frequently as possible.

He noted there is a full-time SRO, Deputy Tim Bailey, at Hopkins County Central High School, and Deputy John Komar works split duty at South Middle and Southside Elementary schools.

A new SRO will serve at Hanson and Earlington elementary facilities. The sheriff said statistics show violence occurs mostly in high schools followed by middle and elementary. West Hopkins will have a full-time SRO.

“Two additional SROs from the sheriff’s office will be added and five additional Madisonville Police Department officers (in city schools),” Sanderson said.

Board attorney Keith Cartwright said other districts are watching what Hopkins County is doing regarding school safety measures.

“Children’s safety is by far the most important mission that we all have,” Sanderson said.

Director of Engagement, Equity and School Support Robert Carter said they have a team approach and all 12 SRO’s come together for weekly meetings. Should there be an emergency in any school, all 12 would respond.

Superintendent Deanna Ashby said, “This is truly “Team Hopkins, at its best.”
