YMCAMADISONVILLE, Ky. (6/12/18) — In the final days of the Kentucky Legislative Session, House Bill 487, which includes provisions for a 6 percent sales tax being levied on all services including YMCA membership and program fees was passed.

As a result of HB 487 being put into law, this change will affect sales tax at the Y, and every Kentucky nonprofit, for the first time in history, local YMCA organizers announced.

As a charitable organization that provides more than $137,000 in financial assistance to ensure that all can participate, the Y reported it is greatly disappointed by the impact House Bill 487 will have on services provided by nonprofit organizations like the Y. For some Kentucky nonprofits it will clearly affect the benefit and support they will provide within communities.

As a result — effective for transactions occurring on or after July 1, the state will collect a 6 percent sales tax on YMCA membership and programs (excluding licensed Child Care) at the Hopkins County Family YMCA, the local staff said.

The new sales tax was neither initiated nor supported by the Y, but the YMCA is required by law to implement it. This increase will be remitted to the state directly by the YMCA. YMCA members and program participants have the option to pre-pay their membership or Summer Camp dues before July 1 to avoid the 6 percent hike, local YMCA staff indicated.
