Chief 7 9MADISONVILLE, Ky. (7/9/18) — The city of Madisonville will fly flags at half-mast Tuesday to honor a former fire chief who died Saturday.

Tommy Williams, 68, served on the Madisonville Fire Department for more than 33 years. He was chief from 1999 until his retirement in 2006. During his tenure as chief, MFD was awarded a FEMA grant to replace the department’s aging breathing equipment.

“Chief Tommy Williams was not only a man who served as a local firefighter, he was a man who served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War," Madisonville Mayor David Jackson said in a statement. “He is, and will remain, and outstanding example of a person who selflessly dedicated his life to protect others and for that he will not be forgotten.”

Fire Chief Ray Wyatt noted Williams was a “pillar of honor and respect within the MFD community,” adding it is tragic to lose a part of the MFD family that put his life on the line to help others, calling Williams a “true hero.”

Assistant MFD Chief Jeff Baldwin remarked Williams was a dedicated and professional servant.

The city reflected on one example of Williams’ bravery:

“Chief Williams was also on duty during the afternoon of Nov. 15, 2005 when an F-4 tornado swept through the community damaging or destroying nearly 500 homes. All city firefighters reported to work, and with the assistance from surrounding communities, search and rescue operations were completed before nightfall. This was the strongest reported tornado in the country in 2005.”

Funeral services for Williams will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Harris Funeral Home in Madisonville. Visitation is 9-11 a.m.
