LeeMADISONVILLE, Ky. (7/9/18) — Madisonville City Council Chairman Mark Lee filed a petition at Hopkins County Clerk Keenan Cloern’s Office today declaring his candidacy to run for Madisonville mayor in the upcoming November General Election.

Simultaneously, Lee withdrew as an uncontested Independent candidate for the Madisonville City Council Ward 1 seat, which he has occupied for more than six years. Candidates have until 4 p.m. Aug. 14 to seek office as a certain Independent in the General Election.

Lee said, “I’m purposely doing so well in advance of the filing deadline so that one or more qualified candidates with the desire to serve this city” is given a chance to run for the Ward 1 position on the council. He will serve out his term as councilman through Dec. 31.

Lee will face Madisonville restaurant owner Kevin Cotton, a Republican that defeated two-term Republican Mayor David Jackson in the May Primary Election. Cotton beat Jackson by less than 100 votes. Democrat David C. Oakley, who was uncontested in the Primary, also seeks election for mayor.

The councilman, a local business owner and juris doctorate, believes leadership and tenacity matters concerning the future of Madisonville and direction in the region.

He believes in progress and quality of life, saying he is up to the challenge for change concerning the betterment of the community.

He is asking for public input to build on improvements, adding he can be reached by calling his personal cell phone number at (270) 452-1400.

Lee was in the company of friends and his son, Carson Lee, and father, Curtis Lee, in signing the nominating petition alongside his wife, Maria K. Lee, who he named as his campaign treasurer. In addition, Mike Deal of Madisonville will be Lee’s campaign manager.

“I expect a good campaign and election,” he said. “I will be discussing the issues and my vision, as well as sharing ideas and concerns that are shared with me by other community members.”
