Gipson 2MADISONVILLE, Ky. (8/8/18) — The community gave a hand up during the Madisonville Police Department/Hopkins County Sheriff's Office 8th Annual “Cram the Cruiser” event held recently in Hanson.

MPD Lt. Scott Gipson reported the agencies collected $5,663 in school supplies and cash donations Saturday. Kids shopping with their parents and grandparents at Walmart also took time out to chat with officers and pose for photos.

Gipson noted people donated 1,900 notebooks, 38 backpacks, 525 packages of pencils, 200 packs of assorted colored pencils and many other school items.

MPD Citizens Police Unit volunteer members were busy sorting all the donations Monday morning at the station downtown that were taken to the PACS-Hopkins County Assistance Center, and then divided between all Hopkins County Schools Family Resource Centers.

Police said they began the endeavor so that children could start the school year with needed supplies. Officers have collected more than $60,000 in donations over the years.

Classes resumed in the Hopkins district today.
