GVFD 2HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (8/8/18) — The 29 members of Grapevine Volunteer Fire Department gathered at the station this evening in anticipation of receiving its first brand new fire truck in 33 years.

The $265,726 hi-tech firefighting machine was obtained through a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters grant written by John Dunning of Madisonville Fire Department, who also celebrated with GVFD members today.

Charlie Chapman of All American Fire dealership drove the engine down from Ohio, saying he needed a ride back.

Hopkins County Fiscal Court provided $5,000 toward the purchase and the department finished the match with $13,993.

“It’s basically a modern, safe apparatus,” GVFD Chief Nick Bailey said. “We make 15-18 fire responses per year, and 75 percent of our runs are medical assistance calls. This is the only (new fire truck) awarded to Hopkins County this year," adding several of its members are EMTs and paramedics.

Even though it now sits in the bay at Grapevine, firefighters say it belongs to the citizens of Hopkins County and they are ready to assist when duty calls.

The all-volunteer members could hardly wait to climb inside and on top of the red 2018 Rosenbauer pumper truck, which holds 1,000 gallons of water and features a 20-gallon Class A foam cell.

The department’s vintage 1976 pumper truck was decommissioned and will be sold to a possible collector or to a farmer. GVFD has owned the old pumper, which has an open/convertible cab, since the early 1990s. It only has about 45,000 miles on it, but it cannot be used to fight fires due to safety regulations, the chief said.

Bailey pointed out that GVFD still uses its 1993 pumper truck, which is also parked inside the bay off Grapevine Road.

The Rosenbauer, made in Lyons, South Dakota, was driven to Ohio a few weeks ago for radio installation and other additions. Bailey said it has undergone rigorous inspection before delivery.

“We actually flew to South Dakota to inspect the truck” the chief said. “It was custom ordered.”
