MADISONVILLE, Ky. (8/21/18) — Children and their families will soon be able to get playtime alongside peers at a new Pediatric Play Park that will also help them build strength each day free of charge.

Baptist Health Madisonville Foundation made the announcement Monday at the hospital’s Miller Auditorium. Countryside Play Structures based in Indiana will begin construction on the $250,000 project at Wellness Park courtesy of donations made from around the community.

BHM Foundation Development Officer Cameron Lee Edwards said they are $80,000 away from their fundraising goal. The foundation raised $170,000 in 40 days for the “Rog Badgett All Inclusive Pediatric Play Park.”

BHM President Robert Ramey expressed gratitude to donors enabling the faith-based foundation to expand services for all families around the region.

Edwards mentioned it has been a dream of the pediatric care therapy team for nine years.

“The work you do sends echos out in our community,” he said, pointing out the therapy team. “They make miracles happen every day.”

Sports medicine director Mary Ann Ramsey held back tears as she spoke to families with children that participate in physical therapy services alongside several health and city officials during the announcement.

She explained the department sees 100-150 children per month from across western Kentucky, and many are still on a waiting list for therapy.

“It’s a place for a child to go, hang out and get better,” Ramsey said, adding many in therapy are limited to sessions at the hospital due to cost. The playground will provide a fun place for children to be able to get out of their wheelchairs and play side by side with other kids, while obtaining vital developmental activity.

“I’m so grateful for today,” Ramsey said.

Ramsey took time to pose alongside one of her 13-year physical and speech therapy patients, Abbey Wood, and mother, Jessica Wood.

The parent said the new playground will be a great, inclusive addition and is a true reflection of a caring community.
