RotaryMADISONVILLE, Ky. (10/8/18) — The Hopkins County Happy Feet program has been providing shoes for area children since 2012. During those six years, the nonprofit organization has provided 5,000 pairs of shoes to those in need.

This was the message from Happy Feet volunteers Cheri McNary and Amie McKnight to the Madisonville Rotary Club, which donated $1,000 toward the effort this year. McNary said the program is extremely efficient because there is no overhead and no staff.

McNary said family resource centers in each school identifies children that need shoes. Happy Feet volunteers then coordinate with Shoe Carnival to fit shoes to the children before purchasing. The volume purchase and nonprofit status of Happy Feet insure maximum impact for each dollar of the $26,000 donated yearly.

The organization estimates that 700 pair of shoes will be fitted to needy children in Hopkins County this year along with two to three pairs of new socks.

A new program, “Chance to Dance,” provides used prom dresses to young women who would otherwise be unable to attend the high school events. Their outfit is completed with new shoes from Happy Feet as well as jewelry, a visit to a hairdresser and makeup makeover at Merle Norman. Volunteers noted the program served 35 young women last year.

“Some had never been to a hairdresser,” McNary said.
