Arrest Log HCSheriff v2 300EARLINGTON, Ky. (2/8/19) — Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office deputies spent nearly two hours in the pouring rain Thursday afternoon in search of a rifle hidden in the woods.

HCSO Spokesman Major Will Coursey said they received a call from a resident in the Dulin and Woodlawn vicinity of Earlington around 1 p.m. that a man was firing random shots near a wooded area.

“We located a male subject who fit the description, but he was unarmed,” Coursey said. “The witness told us he walked into the woodline with the gun and he came out without it.”

Deputies, drenched by heavy rainfall, eventually found the AR-15 in a back yard at the edge of the woods. Coursey said the weapon was loaded.

“There are lots of houses in that area, and we could not leave that gun out there unsecured,” the major explained, because a child in the neighborhood could have found it.

Steven Hamilton, 40 of Earlington, was charged Thursday with first-degree wanton endangerment and convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He was released from Hopkins County Jail today on a $2,000 surety bond.
