Madisonville Seal 02 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (6/17/19) — It was a tie vote tonight for an ordinance related to Sunday package liquor sales during a Madisonville City Council meeting held at City Hall.

Councilman Adam Townsend requested the ordinance be brought from the table for second reading. Mayor Kevin Cotton broke the tie for the ordinance to be heard, and chose to abstain from voting following second reading that ended in a tie.

The ordinance is now history. It would also have allowed the city to raise alcohol sales tax, from 4 to 5 percent.

Townsend explained businesses approached him in order to allow Sunday package liquor sales, which he believes would have kept revenue in the city instead of surrounding cities including Henderson, Hanson and Dawson Springs to gain the commerce from alcohol sales.

Hopkins County Regional Chamber of Commerce president Leslie Curneal also spoke in favor of the ordinance, urging the council to keep business in the city.

Council members Adam Townsend, Misty Cavanaugh and Frank Stevenson voted yes, while Tony Space, Bobby Johnson and Larry Noffsinger voted no.

Johnson said many of the constituents in and outside of his district expressed they were not in favor of Sunday liquor store sales, although he understands from a business perspective, the reasoning behind the ordinance. Noffsinger also said constituents gave unfavorable feedback concerning Sunday package liquor sales in the city.

Cotton said following the meeting he did not want to stand in the way of what the council wished to decide on the matter.
