scam alert red 300HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (6/25/19) — Kentucky State Police Post 2 reported receiving a call Monday related to phone scam.

The individual told troopers they received a phone call from a male stating the unidentified resident had won $170,000 and a new vehicle, KSP wrote. The caller then requested $300 in order to process the winnings. After the individual sent $300, an additional amount of $2,500 was requested to finish the processing. In addition to the funds, they requested the individual open a savings account, and that the account information be given to them.

The phone number is possibly Jamaican, but it is believed it was a generated number that does not exist, KSP reported. At the present time, this is the only report of this type of scam received by Post 2.

KSP reminds residents to never give out Social Security numbers or other personal information over the phone. As a general guideline, people cannot win a contest they have not entered, and legitimate contests would not require anyone to send money to receive winnings.

To report a possible scam, contact the KSP Post 2 Madisonville at (270) 676-3313 or toll free  in Kentucky at 1-800-222-5555 or other local law enforcement agencies.
