breakingnews1HANSON, Ky. (7/19/19) — Part of an old bridge in Hanson has collapsed this morning. There were no vehicles traveling over the structure at the time.

Kentucky 260/Eastlawn Road is closed, just east of the I-69 Hanson interchange due to a structural failure along Old Otter Creek Bridge, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Spokesman Keith Todd reported today. The new Otter Creek Bridge has been under construction at the site with one-lane traffic continuing on the existing bridge with alternating flow controlled by an automated signal.

"This morning, the old bridge collapsed," Todd said. "Fortunately, there were no vehicles on the bridge at the time it dropped."

Kentucky 260/Eastlawn Road is closed at this time.

KYTC District 2 engineers are checking the site at this time to determine what might be done to reopen the road. Engineers are hoping to expedite completion of the new bridge to allow the roadway to reopen in the next few weeks.

One Western Kentucky Veterans Center worker said he had gone across the structure earlier today, and will have to take the long way to get home. He is just glad that he was not on the bridge when it dropped about 6 feet.

Todd reports drivers can self detour via Kentucky 281/Island Ford Road to connect to I-69 at Madisonville. A marked detour will be established as quickly as possible.
