CP 2MADISONVILLE, Ky. (8/6/19) — The city mayor was seen taking a moment from his busy schedule for playtime with area children.

Mayor Kevin Cotton was seen testing the new playground equipment recently installed at Cherry Park during a ribbon cutting ceremony held Monday evening following a council meeting and ceremony to recognize facility upgrades to the Dr. Festus Claybon Park baskeball court.

It was the first endeavor for Madisonville Public Works Department in placing a bonded rubber mat surface that provides cushion for children at play.

The city previously planned to install the new equipment at Mahr Park, but it did not coincide with the layout at Mahr. It was repurposed, instead, to serve 250 families that are within walking distance of Cherry Park, which is situated off West Center Street.

“It saved the city by almost $40,000 by allowing (city employees) to learn how to pour this mat,” Cotton said. “It was a great opportunity.”

Parks Superintendent Jeff Duvall mentioned the pickle ball court work nearby that was completed a couple years ago, with new fencing and a shaded rest area.

“The best thing is, (Cherry Park) is never crowded,” he said, adding other departments also helped out to complete the work. “it’s a great park to bring the kids to.”

Tourism Advisory Board member Karen Tapp said she feels a great responsibility concerning the use of restaurant tax funds for projects in the community.

“This park in particular, I felt very strong about improving and making better,” she said, noting she grew up in the neighborhood and watched kids that previously did not have a playground. “It means a lot to us.”

Parents in the neighborhood also were present during the celebration, saying having the park nearby is greatly appreciated.
