Loch MaryEARLINGTON, Ky. (8/9/19) — A hidden treasure that is frequented by residents and fishermen has restricted hours after an unknown vandal ran a vehicle over the grounds of Earlington City Park, causing damage sometime over the weekend.

Mayor Philip Hunt was busy at Earlington City Hall this week, saying the city decided to set daily park hours 8 a.m.-8 p.m. The park gate was previously open 24-7.

Hunt said city workers have spent countless hours keeping the park neat and clean for people to enjoy.

“It’s disheartening when someone ruins that effort,” the mayor said. “For the past three or four months, the gates have been open. Now, all of a sudden, we’ve got damage and all we can do is lock it up after dark.”

The entrance to the park, surrounded by the serene Loch Mary Lake off Kentucky 1337 will have limited access until further notice. There are several tire tracks visible in a large area of the park’s landscape.

City workers were mowing the land Friday, Hunt said, and when officials went back to the park Monday morning, there were ruts all across the ground.

“We’ve spent a lot of time and effort to clean up the park,” the mayor noted. “We have new attractions and make things top notch for residents and visitors.”

The city no longer has a police department to patrol the area. It closed November 2013 due to budget woes.

Hunt said the city will continue to host activities at Earlington Park, and a festival is being planned there next year.

City officials ask anyone with information about the incident to call (270) 383-5364.
