Cell Phone Lockers 1HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (8/15/19) — A project recently launched by Hopkins County Schools encourages diners to put away their cell pones and focus on face-to-face interaction.

Schools in the district distributed “cell phone lockers” to area restaurants, which are made of cardboard, to serve as a temporary place for people to store phones as families dine out together.

HCS spokeswoman Lori Harrison said the idea is for families to silence their phones, place them in the locker temporarily and enjoy the company of family and friends. The lockers will be in place through this week, and reappear three additional times during the school year.

The outside of each box at restaurants includes ideas to discuss like humorous stories, three good things that happened at school that day or an experience about someone who went out of their way to be nice, Harrison noted.

District director of assessment Andy Belcher came up with the idea for the cell phone lockers after seeing a similar project at a Chick-Fil-A restaurant. Belcher spoke to the franchise owner who generated the idea.

Cell phone “lockers” have been distributed to approximately 65 restaurants in the Hopkins County Schools district, officials said. Around 1,900 boxes are being sent out — one per table — plus a few extra in case boxes become damaged.
