tech2 500HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (8/16/19) — Hopkins County School Board seeks approval in awarding a bid to a local company to tear down the old Tech Center building off Grapevine Road.

The regular school board meeting begins 5:30 p.m. Monday at Central Office in Madisonville.

Construction was never completed on the site after it was determined the ground was not stable enough to hold the structure. Work on the facility was halted in 2011 and the building was condemned. A new Technology and Career Center was constructed off Patriot Drive afterward.

The school board reached a $600,000 settlement agreement with Associated Engineers in 2017 pertaining to the geotechnical services and project construction at the old site.

According to HCS documents, the board seeks approval of the proposed $32,000 demolition contract with Hamby Construction, which is based in Dawson Springs.

The board also proposes to review additional costs of $5,600 for contingency and architect/engineer fees for a total cost of $37,600 to demolish the building. The board lists the demolition costs will be paid out of the district's general fund.
