WhitfieldHOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (8/20/19) — Gov. Matt Bevin’s western Kentucky Department of Local Government Field Representative announced today during a Hopkins Fiscal Court meeting the county is an award recipient of a $1 million scattered housing grant.

DLG Field Representative and Hopkins County native Rebecca Rittenhouse said the governor recently announced the $3 million Community Block Development Grant program awards during a ceremony held in Georgetown. Nearby Crofton received $366,000.

District 6 Magistrate Charlie Beshears led the morning meeting in the absence of Hopkins Judge-Executive Jack Whitfield, who was attending a coal conference in Frankfort today.

Beshears has worked on the grant application process for more than a year, saying the applications will be finalized in a couple of months. Income from the 11 local applicants must be updated along with other property details. The county received 26 applications for new housing construction. One of the main requirements was the homeowners must own the property, where new houses will be constructed. Once the new homes are built, the owners are required to keep property taxes up to date.

Beshears noted the grant for new housing will increase the tax base in the county as well as area property values. He was upheld by the panel of magistrates for his diligent work.

The project locations will be announced once the applications are verified.
