piggybank1HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (8/21/19) — The Hopkins County government property tax assessment will likely hold steady this year, while business owners would pay slightly less on tangible assets.

Hopkins Fiscal Court heard first reading of the 2019 tax ordinance Tuesday at the Government Center in Madisonville.

The county proposes to collect 14.50 cents per $100 assessed value on real estate, according to the ordinance. Tangible/personal property is listed at 20.12 cents, compared to last year’s assessment of 22.38 cents per $100 value.

Hopkins Fiscal Court also proposes motor vehicles and watercraft be levied 10.30 cents per $100 value, which is the same tax assessment listed last year.

Second reading of the ordinance will be heard at the next county government meeting set for 10 a.m. Sept. 10.

In other business, the county heard a tax levy report from Katherine Jury of Hopkins County Extension Office. The board has set its tax rate as recommended by the state at 2.61 cents per $100 assessed value for real estate property, which is a slightly higher rate than last year. Personal/tangible property will be levied 1.87 cents per $100, while motor vehicles will be levied 1.45 cents per $100.

Residents can expect to receive their tax bills in the mail sometime in October.

In other business, the county unanimously approved an ordinance amendment to require property owners be responsible for costs of new culvert installation, with maintenance provided by the road department. The culvert construction/installation must comply with specifications.
