Travis Manion FoundationMADISONVILLE, Ky. (9/7/19) — Runners will line the streets of Madisonville tonight for the seventh annual 5K and 1-mile walk fundraiser to support the Travis Manion Foundation and local first responders.

Special guests will be recognized during opening ceremonies at First United Bank Plaza off Center Street. Activities are scheduled 8-10 p.m. to honor those lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the U.S., the sacrifices of military members and first responders.

Organizers said proceeds from the Madisonville 9/11 Heroes Run events have provided nearly $50,000 in Everyday Heroes mini grants to local first responder agencies in Hopkins County and $50,000 to the Travis Manion Foundation to support veterans and Gold Star families.

More than 50 cities around the world host the annual runs to support Travis Manion Foundation and honor the fallen.

Guests of Honor will include World War II veterans Donald Cobb and Dale Faughn. Cobb was stationed on the Navy Destroyer, USS Murphy at Omaha Beach during D-Day. On June 6, 2019, Cobb was presented the Legion of Honor Medal by the Consul General Macron Lacroix of France. Faughn served as a U.S. Marine Corps Scout Sniper during the Battle of Iwo Jima. In 1986, he was named Poet Laureate of Kentucky, with his most known poem being “I Met the Flag at Iwo Jima.” Faughn retired at the age of 85 after 61 years of teaching. He also holds a Guinness Book of World Records record as being the oldest active blood donor for 43 years and donating more than 33 gallons of blood to date.

The 9/11 Heroes Run 5K series was inspired by Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion, who was killed by an enemy sniper in Iraq in April 2007 as he selflessly pulled his wounded teammates to safety. Before his final deployment, he visited Rescue One in NYC — famous for losing almost all of their men on 9/11 — and returned home with a deeper passion about why he was fighting in Iraq. At its heart, the 9/11 Heroes Run is a tribute to a personal commitment to never forget the heroes of that day.
