RFL CMADISONVILLE, Ky. (9/16/19) — The Hopkins County Relay for Life “Relay your Way” annual event held Friday night at the Madisonville Community College Health Campus kicked off with Hopkins County Central High School JROTC presentation of colors.

HCCHS also held an ice bucket challenge in which faculty members came out on top, raising $500 for the fight against cancer.

Jeanne Knapp of Madisonville was dancing in her seat as music played, saying “You can never give up, there is always something around the corner. God is always with us.” Knapp explained she had undergone a double mastectomy 19 years ago and is still fighting the battle.

A crowd of about 50 individuals rallied around survivors, who each received a medallion during the fundraiser, followed by a Luminaria Ceremony at 9 p.m. to remember those affected by cancer.

Relay chairwoman Trina Duncan said the nonprofit is still calculating proceeds raised by area fundraising teams including Carhartt, GE and several other businesses and organizations.

First United Bank and Trust Co. vice president Jayne Hundley said their staff has worked creatively hosting fundraisers thoughout the year to gather a total of $6,819. The check was presented to Relay organizer Carolyn Foster at the Madisonville bank location Thursday.

Hundley said some of the bank’s fundraisers for cancer victims this year included Cooking for a Cure and Kiss Cancer Goodbye, bringing in $650 more than last year. First United Bank pitched in a $1,500 corporate donation.
