map300 hopkinsDAWSON SPRINGS, Ky. (11/7/19) — Parents/guardians received notice from Dawson Springs Independent Schools today after a threat was found written on a girl’s restroom stall at Dawson Springs High School.

The district wrote that school officials responded immediately due to the words “shoot up the school,” dated Nov. 7., were discovered. It also was reported to the school resource officer, who is actively investigating the incident.

“To this point, we have no evidence or word that there is any truth to this threat,” DSIS Superintendent Lenny Whalen wrote. “We immediately notified staff and went into “high alert” mode and we are still operating in that manner ….”

Extra law enforcement were called in through various times of the day, school officials indicated.

The superintendent asks parents and guardians to speak to students about the severity of these types of threats, citing Senate Bill 1, which lists second-degree terroristic threatening is a felony. 

School officials also urge parents and students to notify staff related to threats made of any nature.

“Rest assured, we will not tolerate any threats or violence in any form,” Whalen wrote, “and our student and staff safety have been and will remain our No. 1 priority.”
