Police LightMADISONVILLE, Ky. (11/20/19) — Madisonville Police Department encountered a driver allegedly holding a knife during a traffic stop, telling police to “kill him.”

A Madisonville Police Department patrolman in a marked unit initiated a traffic stop 1:05 p.m. Tuesday on a vehicle going west along Green Street with a left turn signal on, according to an arrest report. The driver still had a left turn signal on as he was turning right onto Hopewell, swerving left into oncoming traffic.

The driver, identified as Dennis C. Mullins of Madisonville, tuned left onto Thompson Avenue, began to accelerate instead of stopping, police reported, and then came to an abrupt stop. Mullins got out of the 1997 Ford Ranger wielding a large blade in his right hand. A female passenger got out of the truck to move out of harm’s way.

The officer yelled commands for Mullins to drop the weapon, but he refused, prompting the patrolman to call for backup that lead to Mullins being tasered as he moved toward officers carrying the large blade, police indicated. Mullins still refused commands and “continued to scream at us to kill him.” The taser did not penetrate Mullins’ clothing. More officers arrived and he eventually “threw the blade on the ground,” where he continued to resist arrest.

Mullins was charged Tuesday with failure to use proper turn signal, careless driving, first-degree fleeing police in a vehicle, menacing, second-degree disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, no driver’s license and no insurance card.

In another arrest report, officers encountered John Paul Lyon of Cadiz, who was allegedly in a drunken frenzy.

The report lists Lyon fled from the Stop and Go and laundry facility off East Center Street prior to officers arriving on scene at 8:43 p.m. Tuesday. He was allegedly wielding an axe before fleeing.

Officers reported finding Lyon shortly thereafter at Ideal Market off East Center Street during another complaint call. Surveillance video from Stop and Go showed he had a hatchet. He appeared “extremely intoxicated” from alcoholic beverages, and could hardly walk or stand on his own. A worker at Ideal Market claimed Lyon took a pack of Cheetos without paying and was already eating them.

While being put in the back seat of a police cruiser, MPD indicated Lyon spat on an officer at the scene.

Lyon was charged with public intoxication, theft by unlawful taking (Cheetos), third-degree terroristic threatening, two counts of third-degree assault of a police officer (communicable bodily fluid) and served a Trigg County warrant on the charge of failure to appear. At the county jail, police reported he also spat on uniformed officers while sitting on the bench.
