Diabetes is a complex disease that requires many components of daily self-management in order to stay healthy. From making healthy food choices, to staying active, checking your blood sugar and taking medications, there are many things you need to monitor on a daily basis. Education is key to handling these issues and reducing your risk for complications.

According to the American Diabetes Association, over 30.3 million Americans – 9.4 percent of the population – have diabetes. Diet, insulin and oral medication to lower blood glucose levels are the foundation of diabetes treatment and management. Patient education and self-care practices are also important aspects of disease management that help people with diabetes lead normal lives.

Research shows people who take part in diabetes education are more likely to:
·         Use primary care and preventive services
·         Take medications as prescribed
·         Control their blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels
·         Have lower health costs
