This year, organizers also invited next-door neighbor Concordia Care-Maple Nursing & Rehabilitation to join them. The event kicked off National Skilled Nursing Care Week, which is May 13-19, 2018. The theme for this year's National Skilled Nursing Care week is “Celebrating Life’s Stories”.

Carol Rice, Diversicare director of nursing services explained what will be in store for the rest of the week.

"We are doing a weeklong celebration of the lives of our residents. Today is the wheelchair parade, which focuses on resident's hobbies and past occupations; Tuesday, we will have Minute to Win It games with residents; Wednesday, we will celebrate our 2017 Excellence Award and the rapport that we have here as a family; Thursday, residents and team members will put on a Talent Show; and Friday, Team Members will have a Cook-Off,” said Rice.

In continuing the theme of "Celebrating Life's Stories" the meal recipes prepared are chosen by residents as being their past favorites and cooked by the staff, she said.

Jordon Vinson, Diversicare licensed nursing home administrator said the wheelchair parade helps the community get involved with residents.

"These planned events help the community to be aware of the value and importance of the lives of our residents,” said Vinson. “They look forward to this week for months, and we do, too. This week of celebrations underlines our commitment to improve every life we touch, provide excellent healthcare, and exceed expectations. We thank everyone in the community who helped make this event possible — our staff and volunteers, local government, our mayor and the VFW."

Vicki Butler, Concordia Care-Maple licensed nursing home administrator, said their residents were so happy to be invited to join in the parade.

"Our residents and team have planned and looked forward to this huge event for several weeks. Since the theme for National Skilled Nursing Care week is ‘Celebrating Life’s Stories’, our staff and volunteers designed and built the wheelchair decorations based on the life stories of the residents. Some of our stories included a coal miner, nurse, race car driver, hot air balloon driver, Batman and Robin, psychic card reader, Cinderella, prom queen, Minnie Pearl and Grandpa Jones and much more. Everyone is already making plans for next year. It is our goal to make a positive impact in the daily lives of our residents. The excitement and enthusiasm of our residents this morning getting ready for the parade definitely confirmed that positive impact."
