IMG 1980 1POWDERLY, Ky. (4/13/19) — Tackling the county’s litter problem was the focus of yesterday’s gathering of citizens and officials concerned about the negative appearance widespread littering has on the county.

Muhlenberg County Judge-Executive Curtis McGehee said the meeting at the Muhlenberg Career Advancement Center was well attended by several law enforcement officers, elected officials and community leaders.

McGehee formed a committee to address the problem earlier this month. The committee has been divided into subcommittees with a chairperson for each. Chairpeople include Jailer Terry Nunley, clean up division; Road Superintendent Robert Rhoades, trash disposal; Superintendent of Schools Robbie Davis, education division; Vicki Yonts with the Felix Martin Foundation, public relations division; and, County Attorney, Ryan Rice, enforcement division.

“Discussion involved general cleanup operations that have already been underway, as well as future cleanup plans,” McGehee said in a news release. “The committee plans to have a kick off on May 11 for the ‘Cleanup Campaign’. More details about the kickoff will soon be available. Representatives from Central City announced they were having a special event on April 27 to encourage a litter free community. There was also discussion about community involvement, penalties for those who are caught littering and the significance of education.  Discussion continued as the group talked about the feasibility of trash disposal.”

The committee is encouraging all local residents to make sure to do their parts to keep the community as beautiful as possible.
