Rendering Interior 02GREENVILLE, Ky. (6/12/19) — A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at the site of the county's new indoor recreation center next week ushering in Phase II of the plan.

Greater Muhlenberg County Parks and Recreation System will host the ceremony at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 18 at the site of the new facility in Muhlenberg County Park adjacent to Muhlenberg County High School West Campus in Greenville.

The $4 million-facility will be built next to the Ray Jones Family Athletic Complex and will house all winter youth programming as well as being open to the public daily.

The facility was funded entirely by private donors including a $3.25 million grant from the Felix E. Martin Jr. Foundation and other local sponsors.

"Once again, the Felix E Martin Jr Foundation and our generous community leaders have come through to provide a year round facility to enhance the lives of all Muhlenberg County residents,” said GMPRS Director Tommy Barton.

System officials began a fundraising campaign in January that was kicked off by the FEMJ Foundation with its grant.

Barton hopes the new facility will mirror the success of the Ray Jones Family Athletic Complex which hosts all youth outdoor programing along with providing a safe and beautiful place for local residents to enjoy. Both indoor and outdoor facilities also will generate an economic impact on the county by bringing in teams from the tri-state area with travel tournaments. The new indoor facility will be capable of hosting travel tournaments in basketball, volleyball and archery to go along with baseball and softball tournaments already being held at the current facility.

The new facility will have four multi-purpose courts, meeting/class rooms, a mezzanine with batting cages and party room, along with an office, concessions, kitchen and bathrooms which will be open to the public.

“The addition of the Phase II building will be a great addition to Muhlenberg County.  It will be a great place for our kids and adults to participate in recreational and passive activities the entire year.  We are excited to break ground and look forward to completion date to start using the facility,” said GMPRS Board Chairman Steve Wells.

The facility completion date is expected around February 2020. To read a previous story about the facility, click HERE.
