fatal collision 3 300SOUTH CARROLLTON, Ky. (7/1/19) —A Greenville woman died as a result of a head-on collision this morning on U.S. 431 near Davis Circle in South Carrollton and her mother, a passenger in the vehicle, died later at the hospital.

Kentucky State Police was notified at approximately 10:23 a.m. of the collision involving a 2010 Nissan Sentra and 2012 Dodge Town and Country van. KSP's preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the van, 48-year-old Thomas Simpson of Central City was headed south on U.S. 431, when for unknown reason, crossed into the northbound lane of U.S. 431 and struck the Nissan head on. The driver of the Nissan, Karen Leach, 53 was killed, said KSP.

Both vehicles left the road and came to a final rest off the northbound shoulder. Leach was pronounced dead at the scene by the Muhlenberg County Coroner's Office. Her mother, 79-year-old Linda Embry of Greenville was taken by PHI Air Medical to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, where she succumbed to her injuries later this afternoon, said KSP spokesman Trooper Rob Austin.

Simpson was not injured, said KSP.

The investigation is continuing by KSP Trooper Sgt. Nick Rice. Central City Fire Department and Owensboro Health EMS also assisted at the scene.

SOUTH CARROLLTON, Ky. (7/1/19) — Authorities are on the scene of a serious accident on U.S. 431 near Davis Circle in South Carrollton.

Responders are working traffic control in the area and an air medical ambulance has been summoned. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area as emergency personnel assist the accident victim(s).

The roadway is partially blocked at this time (10:20 a.m.) A short time later, the roadway was shut down and remains closed as of 12:50 p.m.
